Applications for Camp 2018 are now closed. Check back in February for applications for Camp 2019!

We ask that the application is filled out by the campers, with particular attention to the “interest paragraph” and “about the camper”, which will be considered when acceptance decisions are made.
Please fill out the form by April 1st, 2018 for full consideration. Acceptance notifications will be sent out via email by April 6th, 2018. Rolling admissions will be made for applications received after April 1st as space allows.

Some years we have had more interested students than we can accommodate. All students who apply by the April 1st deadline will be considered equally, and if there are more applicants than spots, some applicants will be put on a waitlist. There may be space available later than April 1st, and applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis as space allows.

Who can apply?

This camp is for rising 9th-12th graders in the Triangle area who identify as girls or gender nonconforming. No overnight accommodations will be provided, so applicants must live within 40 miles of UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

I like math, but it’s not my strongest subject. Should I still apply?

Yes! This camp is for students who are curious about mathematics and want to explore more advanced math topics in a fun, supportive environment. Anyone who enjoys math or wants to learn more about the different types of mathematics that exist beyond the high school curriculum is encouraged to apply!

What does the application ask for?

We do NOT ask for grades, GPA, letters of recommendation, etc…

The application consists almost entirely of straightforward information about the camper such as contact information and recent math courses taken.

There are two long form questions. One asks for an “Interest Paragraph” where the camper describes in a short paragraph why she is interested in attending Girls Talk Math. The other is an “About the Camper” paragraph where the applicant has a chance to tell us more about their individual interests. Both paragraphs need to be written by the camper and will be considered when selecting attendees. Length: up to 1500 characters.

How long will the application take to complete?

The application without the long form answers should take 5-10 minutes to complete.

About the Camp

Girls Talk Math is a FREE math day camp for rising 9th to 12th graders who identify as girls or an underrepresented gender running from July 9th to July 20th, 2018 (Monday through Friday). Camp activities will be from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Mathematics Department of UNC – Chapel Hill. Before and after care will be offered beginning at 8:30am and ending at 5:00pm. No overnight accommodations will be provided. Girls Talk Math is a day camp, so we will not accept applications from students who live outside of a 40 miles radius from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Campers will work on challenging math problems related to female mathematiciansโ€™ work throughout history. During the camp the girls will create a podcast series about the life of these female mathematicians, and blog posts about the mathematics they do at camp. The problems will cover math topics outside the high school curriculum, giving the girls a taste of college level mathematics.
